Dr. rembetikoNikos Ordoulidis, on popular Musicology in Greece:
The Case of Rembétiko and Laikó Musical Styles

Nikos Ordoulidis studied at the University of Leeds, UK (PhD in Popular Musicology and MMus in Performance) and at the University of Macedonia, Greece (BA in Music Science and Art). His research interests include the Greek urban popular musical styles; discographical research; music, immigration and enculturation; the musical inter-loans amongst cultures of the Mediterranean; and performance techniques of the ‘eastern piano’. He is an active composer (four discographical works) and pianist, the artistic director of the Cultural Music Society ‘VasílisTsitsánis’, and a member of the ‘Modern Greek Studies Association’. He has recently started working on a new project entitled ‘The Eastern Piano Project’ which contains experimentations on several performance techniques around the instrument, given by a series of video-recordings of popular taxims [free-style improvisations].
