It’s that time of year again, winter in Athens – my favorite time of all, since the theaters, clubs and concert halls have full schedules, and there is barely a night where there isn’t something worthwhile doing …. And of course, EVERYONE, meaning, ALL of the greatest Greek singers.

BRIEF TANGENT: Yes, I was in Athens too long this year, I’m becoming very Greek in my use of hyperbole – pronounced “hyperbally”, a word, which, appropriately enough comes from Greek word for excess … according to the Seventh Websters collegiate Dictionary, hyperbole is an extravagant exaggeration used as a figure of speech.

So, while I don’t literally mean every single Greek singer will be performing this winter, there will be enough scattered at clubs throughout the city, including several near our super luxe Athens Penthouses and Historical Homes, terrific self-catering vacation rentals in Athens where you can plant yourself while you explore the city. So, checkout this list or the Calendar of Events for the dates you’ll be in Athens, and plan on a Sunday afternoon lunch with laika/remibetika music or a late night show with Remos, Marinella, MItropanos or Plessas.

How does a little girl from Skokie, Illinois find herself in historical Athens, leading curious explorers through the winding streets of Plaka, down "pezodromos" to hidden ouzeries for tempting mezedhes and homemade barrel wine? The journey began more than twenty years ago, and regardless of whether the wanderlust comes from the spiritual and culture DNA flowing through my veins, or the alignment of the stars on that cold mid-December day this Sagitterian came into the world, I never seem to tire of exploring my adopted homeland of Greece. Here you'll join me as I explore Athens: be it the back streets of Psirri and Gazi, or through the National Gardens and Zappeio where a family of turtles makes their home, or down wide, treelined Imittou Street in Pagrati, which pulses with Athenian life 24 hours a day. And while Athens has stolen my heart, the rest of Greece vies for my curiousity and wanderlust. My two guys (that'd be the Greek God, Vasilis and our Greek dog, Scruffy) and I can often be found settling in for a long weekend in some charming mountain village, or a quaint fishing port on a nearby island, or learning how Greek vitners are producing wines that rival some of Napa Valley's finests productions, or celebrating a panayeri in Epirus or sharing in the festivities as a family of Cretan sheepherders come together to sheer their 1500 sheep in the spring ... And if you happen to find yourself heading to Athens, consider finding yourself a real home for your stay. Living amongst the locals, be it for 3 nights or 3 weeks, will offer you the chance to experience true Athens, beyond the Acropolis. Choose from one of our 5 beautiful penthouse and historical homes, and who knows, I may be leading you down that winding "pezodromo" to our favorite hidden ouzerie!

  1. So, If I wanna go on 17th April to Iera Odos, is it sure that I will see Terzis singing? :-)

    thanks for information

  2. No, it is not sure – this show was originally scheduled to end at the end of January, but, like everything in Greece, even that was subject to change.

Like everything on the events calendar, I recommend calling the venue to confirm.

  3. Hi from Brisbane Australia!

Can you tell me where to find what gigs are on New Years Eve in athens / Glyfada?

  4. Hi,

I will be visiting Athens in October 2009 and would like to find out which singers will be performing and at which venues. In particular i would like to see Nikos Oikonomopoulos.

Can you advise where i can find this information.

    Many Thanks

  5. Hi Chris
It is a bit early for the club/venue schedules to be announced. Check back here on this blog in early September and hopefully we’ll have some of the schedules published. You can also sign up for updates in the upper right hand corner of the blog – this way you will be notified when Oikonomopoulos is performing.
