September in Athens, the Greeks are now starting to greet one another with kalo himona, ([have a] good winter), I’m reminded that it’s time to check out my favorite billboards around town, my number source for bouzoukia lineups … And of course once again, EVERYONE, meaning, ALL of the greatest Greek singers (except for Yiannis Poulopoulos, the Greek singer to whom I attribute my love of all things Greek. And the singer who, from this point forward, I will personally begin a campaign to get to return to the performance stage, but that is another post).
REMEMBER LAST YEAR’S BRIEF TANGENT? Last year I was in Athens too long, I became very Greek in my use of hyperbole – pronounced “hyperbally”, a word, which, appropriately enough comes from Greek word for excess … according to the Seventh Websters collegiate Dictionary, hyperbole is an extravagant exaggeration used as a figure of speech. This year, I’ve been here less time, so I guess I am just becoming Greek and that explains my use of the word, “everyone”..
So, while I don’t literally mean every single Greek singer will be performing this winter, there will be enough scattered at clubs throughout the city, including several near our super luxe Athens Penthouses and Historical Homes, terrific self-catering vacation rentals in Athens where you can plant yourself while you explore the city. So, checkout this list or the Calendar of Events for the dates you’ll be in Athens, and plan on a Sunday afternoon lunch with laika/remibetika music or a late night show with Remos, Marinella, Mitropanos or Plessas.

Hi Michal – I’m on the lookout … driving up and down Pireos street on a daily basis, watching for the next banner or billboard to appear … I keep hoping to see Marinella or Remos’ faces smiling down on from the poles lining the center of the road, alas, they are conspicuously missing … Makes me wonder ….
