As August comes to a close the Athenians begin returning to their city. That’s good news for travelers who’ve waited to visit Athens, because it means that while the temperature cools down, the nights heat up with the autum concert and theater line-up. Not only are there some great names in song performing at the 2010 Petra Festival (my choice? Haris Alexiou on September 14, 2010 … hint, the next night is Socrates Malamas – take a mid week break and come to Athens for these two great performances!) And while the Petra Festival is known for a great musical lineup, imagine yourself experiencing classic Greek theater as the ancients once did: in an outdoor, stone ampitheater under the stars. If you missed the chance to see something this summer at the theater at Epidaurus, why not venture to the Petra Festival where you can experience the work of such great Greek writers as Aristophanes or Euripedes? Sure, the performances will be in Greek (or in ancient Greek) and you won’t understand a word, but you can read the Cliff Notes beforehand and follow along as the stories have not changed in thousands of years and besides, Greek theater is as much about feeling, passion and emotion as it is about words (think about opera, it’s the same thing).

Built at the old open quarry area of Petroupolis, a suburb 15 minutes by taxi from Syntagma Square, Petra open-air theatre is the venue for all the events of the International Petra Festival. The International Petra Festival is the end of summer/early fall Festival for locals and often attracts the same performers as the Athens Festival at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. Past musical performers likeAlice Cooper and Iggy Pop, Greek singers like George Dalaras and Marinella, and some of the greatest Greek and international dance and theatrical groups have performed on this stage.

By Athensguide

How does a little girl from Skokie, Illinois find herself in historical Athens, leading curious explorers through the winding streets of Plaka, down "pezodromos" to hidden ouzeries for tempting mezedhes and homemade barrel wine? The journey began more than twenty years ago, and regardless of whether the wanderlust comes from the spiritual and culture DNA flowing through my veins, or the alignment of the stars on that cold mid-December day this Sagitterian came into the world, I never seem to tire of exploring my adopted homeland of Greece. Here you'll join me as I explore Athens: be it the back streets of Psirri and Gazi, or through the National Gardens and Zappeio where a family of turtles makes their home, or down wide, treelined Imittou Street in Pagrati, which pulses with Athenian life 24 hours a day. And while Athens has stolen my heart, the rest of Greece vies for my curiousity and wanderlust. My two guys (that'd be the Greek God, Vasilis and our Greek dog, Scruffy) and I can often be found settling in for a long weekend in some charming mountain village, or a quaint fishing port on a nearby island, or learning how Greek vitners are producing wines that rival some of Napa Valley's finests productions, or celebrating a panayeri in Epirus or sharing in the festivities as a family of Cretan sheepherders come together to sheer their 1500 sheep in the spring ... And if you happen to find yourself heading to Athens, consider finding yourself a real home for your stay. Living amongst the locals, be it for 3 nights or 3 weeks, will offer you the chance to experience true Athens, beyond the Acropolis. Choose from one of our 5 beautiful penthouse and historical homes, and who knows, I may be leading you down that winding "pezodromo" to our favorite hidden ouzerie!
