Love this museum. It’s rarely on the typical tourist radar, but unlike many contemporary art museums I’ve visited in the past, this one seems to offer art that I can understand. And it’s all accessible art. I don’t mean wheelchair friendly (though the museum, in its current “temporary” home, is wheelchair accessible), I mean art you can approach, move around, walk through, even touch and sometime eat. I love that the collections pour out into the space surrounding the museum (and, note to the powers that be at EMST: I worry that your new space on Sygrou may lose some of that, where will the outdoor exhibits take place? Where would you be able to plant a People’s Garden on Sygrou Avenue?)
So when you are heading out to explore Athens growing “Museum Campus”, that area behind the Presidents Mansion going toward Hilton, don’t skip visiting the National Musem of Contemporary Art, even if you are only going to walk “by” it. There are usually some exhibits out front and around the museum (which make it a fantastic place to explore on holidays and strike days in Athens!) and I’m pretty certain you’ll leave having had your mind exercised at least just a little bit.
Special items to highlight about EMST: Thursdays are FREE from 5 pm to 8 pm (combine this with a visit to the nearby Benaki, open until midnight on Thursdays and you’ve got an entire night of free museums.) They also offer guided tours at 7 pm on Thursday evenings and Sundays at noon (the museum is not free on Sundays).
